Save the Kiwi is built on thousands of volunteers that all share the same concern for conserving their national symbol for generations to come. They cover a wide range of efforts, from education to egg nurseries, pest control, and more.

Conservation

Unfortunately, kiwi birds are currently endangered due to invasive species, deforestation, and separation of populations. What was once estimated to be approximately 20 million kiwi birds on the island are now only 68,000 left in the wild. However, conservation efforts from the government and joint nonprofit organizations have helped to curb declining populations.

Department of Conservation

The Department of Conservation in New Zealand is another notable rescue effort for kiwi birds. They work closely with Save the Kiwi, developing safe habitats for kiwis to roam and thrive. The Department of Conservation performs extensive research and close monitoring from capture to release of all kiwi birds they work with.
